Wastewater Treatment Plant Receives “Outstanding Performance” Award for 2019

Thanks to the dedicated work of the South Kitsap Water Reclamation Facility (SKWRF) staff, the facility—owned jointly by the City of Port Orchard and the West Sound Utility District—has received the 2019 Wastewater Treatment Plant Outstanding Performance Award from the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Out of approximately 300 wastewater treatment plants across the state, SKWRF was one of only 119 facilities to achieve full compliance with the requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. This recognition reflects the facility team’s consistent dedication to maintaining the highest environmental and operational standards.

The SKWRF team has earned this award multiple times recently, including in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, making the 2024 recognition another outstanding accomplishment.

Wastewater from homes and businesses throughout the community travels through the sewer system to the treatment facility. Skilled operators carefully monitor and treat the water around the clock to ensure it meets strict environmental quality standards before releasing it.

Receiving this award means that SKWRF’s treated wastewater—known as effluent—has consistently met the high water quality standards required for discharge into Sinclair Inlet. The achievement highlights the team’s ongoing commitment to protecting local waterways and the health of the community.
